The Artist/Publisher Relationship
The Artist/Publisher relationship is like a marriage with communication playing a very important role. It is important to realize that being “in print” is not the right choice for everyone. There are many very successful artists whose work is not appropriate for publication but this does not detract from the value of the work or the reputation of the artist. Being published should always be considered as separate from, and in addition to, an artist’s main concern – the creation of ever-improving original work.
Somerset Fine Art is a publisher of high quality, limited and open edition reproductions. We are most successful with established artists whose original work is in high demand, but occasionally we are quite successful with an artist whose work does not have an impressive sales history.
We do not purchase original work; it remains the property of the artist. However, we do require that the artist guarantee that he or she will not reproduce any additional images from paintings that we reproduce as limited or open editions. The artist retains the copyright of the painting while Somerset Fine Art files and retains the copyrights on all forms of reproduction.
Art Submissions Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in Somerset Fine Art.
Our New Art Group reviews submissions from artists on a regular basis.
You may submit your work in one of several ways:
- Submit a portfolio of 35mm slides or photos
- Submit a CD with digital images of your work
- Email digital images of your work
Whichever way you choose to show us your work, please include a minimum of 10 to 12 images that would be available for reproduction (meaning that they have never been reproduced, in any form, previously).
Please include the size and medium of each image and the year it was completed. In addition, we prefer to see a biography including a list of the galleries that represent your original paintings and the price range of your original work. We would also like to know how many paintings you (or your galleries) have sold within the last 24 months including the size and selling price of each. Please do not send larger transparencies in your initial submission as we can not be responsible for unsolicited transparencies.
Your work will be reviewed promptly, and you will receive a written response for submission of slides and photos or CDs. You will receive an email response for emailed submissions.
Because several people review each submission, it may take several weeks for you to receive a response. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish us to return the contents of your submission.
Thank you for considering Somerset Fine Art for your publishing needs,
and we look forward to seeing your work.
